Ultimafestivalen og Oslo-Filharmonien presenterer en portrettkonsert med Kinas fremste og høyest aktede komponist: Tan Dun. Orkesterstykket Fire Ritual – a music ritual for the victims of war, som får verdenspremiere i Oslo, har allerede en norsk dimensjon – det ble nemlig skrevet for fiolinisten Eldbjørg Hemsing, som her skal fremføre verket sammen med Oslo-Filharmonien dirigert av Tan Dun i egen person.

På våre kanter er Tan Dun best kjent for å ha komponert den Oscar- og Grammy-belønte musikken til Ang Lee-filmen Snikende tiger, skjult drage (2000). Tan Duns egen livsreise fra å vokse opp i den landlige Hunan-provinsen øst i Kina under kulturrevolusjonen til å bli en av verdens mest anerkjente og nyskapende komponister, gjør ham til en kulturell migrant fra det gamle Kina til det nye.

Tan Dun knytter Kinas historie til nåtidens hendelser og teknologi. Inspirasjonen til Fire Ritual kom under et besøk til de forhistoriske hulemaleriene i Dunhuang. Med verket Passacaglia: Secret of Wind and Birds (2015) skaper komponisten et kor av digitale fugler ved å la kinesiske instrumenter klinge gjennom mobiltelefoner. Ultima-publikummet får også oppleve nye versjoner av satsene Rock the Violin in Rhapsody og A Dream Out of Peking Opera fra Violin Concerto Rhapsody and Fantasia.

Ultima and Oslo-Filharmonien presents a portrait concert of China’s most prominent and respected composer: Tan Dun, who will conduct the concert in person. His Fire Ritual – a music ritual for the victims of war, which receives its world premiere in Oslo, already has a Norwegian connection: it was written for violinist Eldbjørg Hemsing, who will perform at this concert with Tan Dun and Oslo-Filharmonien.

Tan Dun is best known to Western audiences as the Oscar- and Grammy-winning composer of the soundtrack to Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000). His journey from his childhood in China’s rural Hunan province during the Cultural Revolution to become one of the world’s most celebrated and cutting-edge composers makes him a cultural migrant from the old China to the new.

Tan Dun connects China’s history with present day events and technologies. Fire Ritual was inspired by a visit to the Dunhuang prehistoric cave paintings. Passacaglia: Secret of Wind and Birds (2015) creates a chorus of digital birds by playing Chinese instruments through mobile phones. The programme also includes the violin concerto Rhapsody and Fantasia, in a new version for this concert.
