Today, the world faces a multitude of challenges: extreme weather and climate change, hostile states, global extremist organisations, the rise of nationalism, political fragmentation, organised crime and terrorism to name a few. This has been referred to as the "new normal". But what is the new normal when it comes to the High North and the Arctic and what impact does it have on the land domain?
From a U.S. and NATO perspective - where Norway is regarded as the Northern Flank of the Alliance - the concern is that Norway does not have a credible plan to reach the 2 per cent GDP target and that the Norwegian Army does not have a fully mechanised bridage. Furthermore, the High North and the Arctic are rich in resources ranging from minerals, oil and gas, to fish and seafood. What will it take to safeguard peace and stability in this area in uncertain times?
These are some of the questions we will discuss at the Norwegian Army Summit in Oslo on the 18th of September.
