The security environment in Europe has worsened significantly in the last decade. Russia has proved willing and able to use military force against its neighbours and is modernising its military. This includes the maritime domain, where Russia is strengthening its naval forces – notably with capable, long-range missiles¬ on high readiness. In a crisis, Russia could threaten NATO's freedom of movement and contest vital sea lines of communication across the North Atlantic. 

To meet this potential challenge allies and partners are boosting their maritime surveillance and anti-submarine warfare capabilities and strengthening NATO's command structure. The UK and Norway must be leaders in this effort. 

This IFS seminar offers insight, perspective and visions from the chief of the UK defence staff and the Norwegian chief of defence.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach, 
GBE, KCB, ADC, DL is a senior Royal Air Force officer. After training as a navigator, Peach commanded IX (Bomber) Squadron and then became Deputy Station Commander RAF Bruggen. He was the NATO Air Commander (Forward) in Kosovo in 2000, became Chief of Defence Intelligence in 2006, Chief of Joint Operations in 2009, Commander of Joint Forces Command in December 2011, Vice-Chief of the UK Defence Staff May 2013 and Chief of the UK Defence Staff July 2016. He will take the position as Chairman of the NATO Military Committee in the summer of 2018.

Admiral Haakon Bruun-Hanssen
started his military career as a submariner of the Royal Norwegian Navy. He has served as torpedo-, navigation- and commanding officer of HNoMS Ulstein, staff officer in the Naval Staff and faculty advisor and tutor at the Joint Staff College. He became the Chief of the Naval Staff in 2006, Chief of the Royal Navy in 2008, Commander of the Norwegian Joint Headquarters in 2011 and has held the position as Chief of Defence since 2013
