Welcome to the launch of RADI-AID RESEARCH, a report about perceptions of visual communication from INGOs.
The use of images by NGOs and humanitarian organisations certainly have an impact on the amount of money collected, but they are often criticised for using stereotypes, being superficial, failing to provide context and promoting an oversimplified view of reality, as well as lacking dignity and respect for those portrayed. Numerous academic books, research papers, news articles and independently commissioned reports have been published on the subject of aid communication and humanitarian communication. What is missing from this body of research is a study which asks beneficiaries of aid what they think themselves. What is their perception and opinion of the images used in INGO communication? How do they feel about the way African countries are depicted?
In this project we have aimed at expanding our mandate to the research field in order to further knowledge about visual INGO communication and how it is perceived. Lead by senior lecturer David Girling from the University of East Anglia, this study is based on focus groups of adults and young people in six African countries - Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, South Africa, Uganda and Zambia.
David Girling will present the findings from the study.
